    Medicare basics

    Key Medicare enrollment dates

Timing matters with Medicare. Missing a window can mean waiting months to make a change, or paying a late enrollment penalty. Here are the dates to know.

    Initial Enrollment Period

    Around your 65th birthday

A 7-month window: the 3 months before the month you turn 65, your birthday month, and the 3 months after.

    Annual Enrollment Period

    October 15 to December 7

Each fall you can switch Medicare Advantage or Part D plans, or move between Original Medicare and Medicare Advantage. Changes start January 1.

    Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment

    January 1 to March 31

If you’re already in a Medicare Advantage plan, you can switch to a different one or go back to Original Medicare.

    Medicare questions we hear often

What’s the difference between Medicare Advantage and a Medicare Supplement?

Medicare Advantage (Part C) plans are offered by private insurance companies and bundle your hospital and medical coverage, often with prescription drug coverage, usually using a provider network. A Medicare Supplement (Medigap) plan works alongside Original Medicare to help pay costs like deductibles and coinsurance, and you’d typically add a separate Part D plan for prescriptions. We’ll help you compare both.

Do I need to sign up for Medicare if I’m still working at 65?

It depends on your employer coverage and the size of the company you work for. Some people can delay Part B without a penalty while they have employer coverage, and others can’t. We’ll walk through your situation so you don’t miss a deadline.

What should I have ready for my Medicare consultation?

A list of your doctors and the prescriptions you take, plus your Medicare card if you already have one. That lets us check which plans cover what matters to you.

Does it cost anything to get Medicare help from you?

No. Our help is free. Insurance companies pay us, and your premium is the same whether you enroll with us or on your own.
